Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya (FP UB), in collaboration with World Agroforestry (ICRAF) Indonesia, held agroforestry system modeling training using WaNuLCAS to improve students’ capacity in agroforestry modeling relevant to soil research and land resource management. The eight students who participated in this training consisted of four undergraduate students from the Agroecotechnology Study Program with an interest in Land Resource Management, and four postgraduate students from the Soil and Water Management Study Program. The training, which took place from (12/8-16/8/2024) was held at the Department of Soil, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya.
This activity was held in order to support the Land4Lives research-action activities funded by the Government of Canada.
This training event was opened by the Chairperson of the Committee, Dr. Danny Dwi Saputra, who is also a lecturer at Universitas Brawijaya. This training was filled by competent speakers in their fields, including Prof. Meine van Noordwijk and Dr. Ni’matul Khasanah from ICRAF, as well as Prof. Didik Suprayogo and Dr. Danny Dwi Saputra from Universitas Brawijaya. The opening of this training was also attended by the Head of the Tropical Agroforestry Research Group, Prof. Kurniatun Hairiah.
“This activity is expected to provide in-depth knowledge about agroforestry modeling, as well as being a useful provision for students to complete their undergraduate and graduate theses,” said Dr. Danny Dwi Saputra in his speech.
Dr. Ni’matul Khasanah as a representative of ICRAF said that students of the Faculty of Agriculture support the Land4Lives research-action activities, especially in Work Package 3 (WP3) with the output of “efforts to improve livelihoods and climate-resilient food security for vulnerable communities, especially women, through first increasing farmers’ access to innovative financing, value chains and gender-sensitive green markets, second, increasing farmers’ knowledge and capacity in climate-smart agriculture to increase productivity and profitability of cultivated commodities, and third increasing knowledge and equal access to healthy and nutritious local food sources and increasing nutritional intake for all members of the community”.
The results of this training will be used as the basis for research for four undergraduate student theses and four postgraduate student theses, all of which are related to land and water resource management in the face of climate change. This research is expected to contribute to supporting Land4Lives activities aimed at improving food security and the livelihoods of disadvantaged and vulnerable communities, especially women, to be resilient to economic fluctuations and the impacts of climate change. The eight students after participating in the training will collect data in South Sumatra, South Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara.
This training is one of Universitas Brawijaya’s real efforts in supporting the development of science and useful research, both at national and international levels. (*/UB PR/ Trans. Iir).
