The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Brawijaya (FKG UB) has once again demonstrated its commitment to help overcoming dental and oral health problems in the community through community service activities held at RA/TK and MI/SD Syihabuddin, Dusun Klandungan, Landungsari, Kec. Dau, East Java. The activity, which was carried out in August 2024, had the main target of maintaining and caring for dental and oral health.
The Community Service Team coordinated by a Periodontics Specialist lecturer from FKG UB consisting of Dr. drg. Ranny Rachmawati, Sp. Perio, drg. Rudhanton, Sp.Perio, drg. Diah, Sp.Perio provided material and education on the importance of caring for teeth from an early age targeting students of RA and MI Syihabuddin. For MI students themselves, there were 87 children consisting of grades 1 to 4, while for RA students, there were 54 children from KB, RA A, and RA B classes. In addition to students from RA and MI, there were also several toddlers who underwent dental check-ups.
The dental check-up itself was carried out in two sessions, namely counseling, followed by screening or oral health check-up. The counseling began at 08.00 WIB and was attended by students of RA and MI Syihabuddin. During the counseling, college students educated students about the importance of maintaining and caring for dental and oral health. After the counseling session ended, it was continued with a fun games agenda attended by all students of RA and MI Syihabuddin regarding the material “Care for Your Teeth, Create a Cheerful Smile” and continued with a question and answer session which was greeted enthusiastically by the participants. Many participants asked questions related to the material that had been presented, as well as brief consultations related to complaints experienced by the FKG UB Periodontics Specialist lecturers. Moreover, the activity was also filled with education on how to brush teeth properly which was also demonstrated by the participants.
During this Community Service activity, the FKG UB team also provided posters, learning modules and teaching aids to RA and MI Syihabuddin so that the teachers there could use them as a means of educating students about how to maintain dental and oral health properly and correctly so that the work produced by the FKG UB Community Service team can be useful for many people.
“Therefore, to increase public knowledge and awareness regarding dental and oral health, lecturers and students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Brawijaya who have knowledge in the field of dentistry should implement this knowledge as one of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education activities. It is hoped that this Community Service activity can be implemented again in the future and become a forum for the entire family of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Brawijaya to continue to spread benefits to others,” said the Coordinator of the Implementation of FKG UB Community Service, Dr. Ranny Rachmawati, drg., Sp. Perio. (*/UB PR/ Trans. Iir).
