FILKOM Holds Guest Lecture AI + X: Introduction

The Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Brawijaya (FILKOM UB) held a guest lecture involving students from Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), Philippines, on Tuesday, (8/20/2024), located in F building, FILKOM UB. This activity is part of the Special Course 2.0 Program organized by the International Relations Office (IRO), to strengthen international relations and broaden students’ horizons in the field of information technology. On this occasion, Dr. Eng. Novanto Yudistira, S.Kom., M.Sc., an expert in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), was invited to give a lecture on the topic of AI + X: Introduction. This topic discusses the concept of integrating AI into various disciplines and technologies that are currently developing rapidly.

He began his presentation by outlining the various AI applications that have been successfully implemented by FILKOM UB students. The main focus is on deep learning applications combined with big data analysis. Some examples of applications that caught the attention of participants were the use of Generative AI to create new and unique Nusantara batik motifs, a project that not only preserves cultural richness but also combines modern technology in the creative process.

In addition, he also highlighted the application of AI in insect pest detection, which can provide solutions for farmers to significantly increase crop yields. Other applications presented were sign language detection, a technology that can open up communication access for people with disabilities, as well as a guide to using Large Language Models (LLM) such as ChatGPT in academic environments. This guide provides insight into how to use this technology ethically and effectively in research and learning activities.

Not only discussing technical aspects, he also shared practical experiences from the industrial world, especially related to research and the application of AI in various sectors.

He emphasized that the success of AI today cannot be separated from advances in computing technology that allows the processing of increasingly complex AI models, increasingly reliable internet infrastructure, and sensor technology that allows the collection of large amounts of data with high precision.

The entire session provided not only theoretical but also practical insights that were very useful for the participants, especially in understanding how AI can be integrated into various aspects of life and industry.

At the end of the event, the delegation from the Philippines expressed their deep interest in establishing further collaboration with FILKOM. They even invited Mr. Yudis, his nickname, to be a speaker at a seminar in the Philippines, which is expected to further strengthen cooperation between the two institutions and provide wider benefits for both parties.
