Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) successfully held The 2024 Joint Conference for Master’s Students in Linguistics attended by 78 graduate students from various universities in Indonesia, which included Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Universitas Jember (UNEJ), and UB itself on Tuesday (10/15/2024).
Aria Maulana, S.S., the chief committee of this conference, expressed his hope that the conference could strengthen the scientific contributions of the participants to the development of linguistic studies at the national and international levels. He also invited the participants to participate actively in the entire series of activities.
“This joint conference event aims to provide a forum for graduate students in linguistics to share research results, deepen discussions, and establish a wider scientific network,” he said in the opening report.
The Head of the Study Programme of Master of Linguistics at FCS UB, Syariful Muttaqin, Ph.D., also delivered his speech. He thanked the committee, lecturers, and participants for their enthusiasm.
“We will send the articles from today’s participants to journals at UGM, UNAIR, UNDIP, UNEJ, and UB. We have four journals ready to accept articles from today’s participants,” said Syariful Muttaqin.
Given the importance of cooperation in academic development today, he hoped this conference could become a closer collaborative forum.
In her speech, the Dean of FCS UB warmly welcomed all participants and presenters. She emphasized the importance of collaboration across universities to produce research that has a broader impact in the future.
“This conference is one form of cooperation or collaboration of the Faculty of Cultural Studies from several universities in Indonesia. Of course, we hope that we can enhance this collaboration in the future when students meet more intensively. Hopefully, it can produce greater things,” he said.
The conference program consisted of several keynote speaker sessions delivered by renowned academics. Prof. Dr. Dra. Ni Wayan Sartini, M. Hum. from UNAIR, opened the session by presenting Lexicon as a Cultural Window: Ethnolinguistic Analysis of Local Traditions. It was followed by Dr. Sajarwa, M. Hum. from UGM, with a presentation entitled Islamic Identity Resistance and Negotiation: Translation of French Cultural Words into Indonesian. Dr. Agus Sariono, M. Hum. from UNEJ, presented the material entitled Some Notes for the Implementation of the Dialectometric Method with the Case of Javanese Language Dialectology Research, and Dr. Syariful Muttaqin, Ph.D., from UB who discussed the Diffusion of English-Medium Instruction among Higher Education Institutions in Indonesia: Towards English as Academic Lingua Franca.
Aside from the keynote speakers, there were also parallel sessions where participants were divided into several rooms in Building A FCS UB to present their research.
This conference is expected to be a stepping stone for future research collaborations, strengthening relations between universities in linguistics and significantly influencing the academic world. [acl/dts/PR FCS]
