
Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) held an “International Seminar on Cultural Sciences (ISCS) 2020” online via Zoom and YouTube Streaming on Wednesday (11/4/2020). This seminar was a discussion forum related to humanities capturing and photographing environmental crises from a cultural, artistic, linguistic, and educational perspective.
ISCS 2020 took the theme “Inclusive Environment: Building Multiculturalism and Multinaturalism in the Era of Ecological Crises and (Post) Pandemic”. This seminar raised issues of minorities such as women, youth, indigenous people, and people with disabilities in environmental crises, and the impacts they face in disaster and pandemic situations.
This activity was opened by the Dean of FCS UB, Prof. Dr. Agus Suman, S.E., DEA., and a remark by the Rector of UB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Nuhfil Hanani Ar., Ms.
“I hope to see comprehensively that natural and technological changes caused by natural disasters such as the global pandemic, COVID-19, can make us more flexible in facing changes in the future,” said Prof. Nuhfil.
The chairman of the ISCS 2020 committee, Hatib Abdul Kadir, M.A, Ph.D., said that the event was held as a medium that connects a network of academics, both national and international, and as many stakeholders as possible to communicate with each other, exchange experiences, and encourage further cooperation in increasing the competitiveness of Indonesian higher education in the international arena.

This seminar presented five speakers from various countries. They were Prof. Rachmi Diyah Larasati from the Department of Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS), University of Minnesota, USA; Prof. Heddy Shri Ahimsa Putra from Universitas Gadjah Mada; Wan Jawahrul Abdul Thani from University Malaysia Sarawak; Sahiruddin, M.A., Ph.D. from UB; and Dr. Roberto Rizzo from the University of Milan.
The presentation of material from various fields of science delivered by the resource persons was expected to provide new views and perspectives on multi-culturalism and multi-nationalism in the current era of ecological crisis and pandemic.
This seminar was also a medium for disseminating research results with a total of 57 texts from national-scale universities including UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Gajahmada University, STIE Koperasi Malang, and several overseas universities.
