The 3rd International Seminar of Cultural Sciences (ISCS) by the Department of Art and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) was held in collaboration with the 7th International Conference of Applied and Creative Arts (ICACA) Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts (FACA), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) on Wednesday to Friday (9/25-27/2024).

It was carried out as a form of realization of the cooperation between the two faculties, which was initiated in 2023. This conference took the theme “Fostering Changes: Unleashing Boundaries of Inspiration in the Creative Arts.”

The conference, which took place at the Borneo Cultures Museum, Kuching City, Sarawak, was opened by the Malaysian Minister of Tourism, Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The keynote speakers were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charles da Costa from Australia, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hatta Azad Khan from Brunei Darussalam, Assoc. Prof. Hamamah, Ph.D., from FCS UB, Indonesia, Mr. Awang Damit Ahmad from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Mr. Saadon Ishak from UNIMAS, Malaysia.

In her remarks, the dean of FCS UB, Assc. Prof. Hamamah, Ph.D., also the keynote speaker, expressed her gratitude for the cooperation between the two faculties. According to her, this cooperation should be developed to facilitate the Tri Dharma activities of lecturers and students of both universities as part of educational development and internationalization.

“Cooperation between universities at the level of faculties, departments, and study programs is a forum for genuine activities that touch the core business of each academic community. So, this collaboration needs to be maintained and improved yearly. This year, FACA UNIMAS is the organizer of the conference. Next year, FCS UB will be the organizer. We will invite the dean and lecturers to participate in the conference,“ she exclaimed.

Dean of FACA UNIMAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Musdi Shanat warmly welcomed this collaboration, which was marked by signing a Letter of Assignment (LoA) between the two Deans.

“We are proud because this 2024 collaboration gave birth to two LoAs, namely LoA Join Conference and LoA Join Research and Publication. Thank you to FCS UB for being a good collaborator. Next year, we are ready to be collaborators at the international conference that FCS UB will hold,” he said.

Eighty-eight presenters presented their research results. There were also conference participants who attended the conference without presenting—all of whom had joined more than 350 people. Five people from FCS UB were present to present scientific articles on their research results. They are the Dean of FCS UB, Assc. Prof. Hamamah, Ph.D., Head of Department of Art and Cultural Anthropology, Dr. Hipolitus K. Kewuel, Head of Anthropology, Nindyo Budi Kumoro, M.A., lecturer of Anthropology, Franciscus Apriwan, M.A., and lecturer of Fine Arts, Mayang Anggrian, M.Pd.

“This collaboration provides a lot of experience. Not only are the campus facilities very supportive, but they also organize a professional but simple conference with maximum support from industry stakeholders,” said Nindyo. [dts/PR FCS]
