FEB Holds Internasional Seminar, Discussing the Future of Inclusive Economy

The Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Brawijaya (FEB UB) successfully held a prestigious international seminar entitled “Global Economic Transformation: Unlocking the Power of Innovation, Inclusion, and Sustainability” at F Building, 7th Floor, FEB UB on (8/28/2024). This event was held together with Udayana University, UIN Malik Ibrahim Malang, and Surabaya State University, demonstrating a shared commitment to encouraging the development of science and innovation in the field of economics.

This seminar was attended by around 700 FEB UB students which were divided into three sessions and presented renowned speakers from various countries. As the keynote speaker, Prof. Mohammed Ali Berawi from the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) explained the vision of developing IKN as a center for innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. He invited all participants to participate in building Indonesia’s future through IKN.

Dato’ Prof. Ulung Dr. Rajah A/L Rasiah from University of Malaya shared his experiences of economic transformation in Asia. He provided valuable insights on how Asian countries can navigate the future by studying the structural transformation models of the economy in the region.

Other speakers, such as Associate Prof. Deirdre O’Neill (Monash University), Prof. Aya Okada (Nagoya University), and Prof. Dr. Ir. MPM Meuwissen (Wageningen University), also presented very interesting materials. Prof. O’Neill discussed the importance of innovative public policies in driving economic transformation, while Prof. Okada analyzed the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on capital-intensive sectors in Asia. Prof. Meuwissen provided an in-depth view of the bio-economy transformation and its implications for the economy, finance, and business.

As the host, Prof. Devanto Shasta Pratomo from FEB UB who is also a member of the Presidential Advisory Board, explained about the industrial downstreaming policy in Indonesia and its prospects in increasing the formality of the workforce.

The packed and interesting event schedule began with singing the Indonesian national anthem and remarks from the Head of the Department of Economics, Dr.rer.pol. Ferry Prasetyia. In his remarks, he said that this conference is a forum for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to share ideas, research findings, and experiences. He also highlighted the main topics discussed, such as finance, banking, financial technology, the future of finance, green finance, and the stability of halal industry investment in the global economy.

In his remarks, the Dean of FEB, Abdul Ghofar emphasized the importance of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in economic development. He quoted the adage “innovate or you will be divided” and gave an example of China’s success in advancing its economy through innovation, especially in the fields of manufacturing technology and urban development. He highlighted the importance of integrating biodiversity into economic planning.

The enthusiasm of the participants was shown by the number of papers submitted reaching 73 papers from various countries such as Thailand, Pakistan, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Japan, and Australia. This shows the high interest of academics and practitioners in sharing knowledge and innovative ideas in inclusive economic development.

As the highlight of the event, the committee also announced the winners of Best Paper and Best Presenter from the results of the selection of papers submitted by participants. This announcement is expected to spur students’ enthusiasm to continue working and innovating.

This international seminar is expected to provide inspiration and new knowledge for FEB students, as well as strengthen the network of cooperation with higher education institutions at home and abroad. With the exchange of ideas and knowledge across countries, it is hoped that innovative solutions can be created to overcome various development challenges currently faced. (an, 2024/UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
