FILKOM Lecturer, Achmad Basuki Achieves Suguru Yamaguchi Memorial Award

One of the lecturers at the Faculty of Computer Science, Brawijaya University (FILKOM UB), namely Achmad Basuki, S.T., M.MG., Ph.D. (Abazh) has achieved the prestigious Suguru Yamaguchi Memorial Award from Japan. This award was given in recognition of his extraordinary contribution in building fast internet infrastructure for educational platforms. This award was given directly by the Father of Internet Japan, Prof. Jun Murai from Keio University.

The Suguru Yamaguchi Memorial Award is an international award given to individuals or organizations that have played a major role in the development of information and communication technology, especially in supporting education. This award is named after a prominent Japanese computer scientist, Suguru Yamaguchi, who made significant contributions to the fields of technology and education.

Achmad Basuki, known as Abazh, was awarded the Dr. Suguru Yamaguchi for his extensive contributions to this community. Abazh currently serves as Head of the Informatics Engineering Department (TIF Study Program). He also serves as Secretary General of Indonesia Research and Education Network (IDREN), where he actively coordinates the development of research and educational institutions in Indonesia.

Abazh himself has extensive experience in operating and managing corporate networks, such as campus networks and research and education networks, for more than 15 years, especially during his master’s and doctoral studies in 2006 – 2012 at Keio Shonan-Fujisawa Campus, Keio University. His research interests include Software Defined Networking, IoT in rural networking/challenges, Internet Architecture, and IP multicast.

Previously, Achamad Basuki was involved in Arterial Research and Educational Network in the Asia Pacific (ARENA-PAC) activities, by providing high speed internet network assistance of up to 100 gigabytes per second (Gbps) for 83 universities in Indonesia, represented by Brawijaya University (UB) and the Indonesia Research and Education Network (IDREN) community last August, where the inauguration was attended by the Rector of UB, Prof. Widodo. S.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.; Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, H.E Heri Akhmadi; Task executor of the Secretary of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, Prof. Tjitjik Sri Tjahjandarie, Ph.D. and Prof. Jun Murai and Prof. Keiko Okawa from Keio University.

“Of course, this award is dedicated to the late Suguru Yamaguchi to commemorate his strong enthusiasm and motivation to contribute to the development of the Internet. “And the hope in the future is that this community will continue to be able to nurture new generations towards the future of the internet,” said Abazh in his award acceptance speech.

The aim of this fast internet is to improve learning facilities for students at all universities in Indonesia and enable the use of advanced technology in learning, such as e-learning, video conferencing and other online education platforms.

This award not only recognizes Achmad Basuki’s contribution in the local context, but also emphasizes his role in helping universities face educational challenges in the digital era. Fast internet has become a key infrastructure in supporting distance learning and knowledge development in the future.

Suguru Yamaguchi Memorial Award won by Achmad Basuki is not only an award for individuals, but also a recognition of the importance of information and communication technology in supporting education throughout the world.
