Biology Lecturers are ‘NGOPI’ to Discuss Herbs and Coservation with Banyuwangi Community

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) held a community service activity through NGOPI activities with the community in the Secang area, Kalipuro Village, Kalipuro District, Banyuwangi, Sunday (8/18/2024).

The community service activity was filled with discussions with participants. The material presented by Prof. Jati Batoro, Dr. Sri Widyarti, Mufidah Afiyanti, Ph.D and Rodiyati Azrianingsih, Ph.D emphasized medicinal plants and health, plant conservation, identification of medicinal plants, local knowledge and traditional medicine, and educational motivation. In addition, further potential related to plants around the community was also identified. This community service activity was carried out with internal funding from FMIPA UB in 2024.

Head of Community Service Activities Prof. Luchman Hakim said that this activity was a continuation of community service activities in previous years which also educated the community about conservation and herbs.

Head of MEM, Imron said that currently the community has explored a lot of potential and empowered themselves with various businesses such as Istana Herbal Kopi Secang, VCO production, and Secang spa.

In the Kalipuro community, plant conservation has also begun, namely planting secang, rosella, clove, and several other herbal plants. This community service activity is also in order to help preserve herbal plants, namely by handing over kaffir lime, lemon, and many other types of seedlings.

From this activity, it can be concluded that ongoing assistance and extraordinary support from community leaders and youth organizations, especially the MEM (Markas Ekoliterasi Merdeka) community, can have an extraordinary impact on the Development of a Resilient and Empowered Community from an economic and social perspective without damaging nature, even supporting conservation.
