FK UB Lecturer Develops Morel Berry for Medical Use

On Tuesday (11/2) Dr. dr. Astrid Kristina Kardani Sp. A, Subsp. Nefro., M. Biomed, a Doctoral Program (S3) student of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) successfully completed her education. The dissertation she carried out was entitled “The Effect of Physalis Angulata Extract on Anti-Nephrin Immunoglobulin G, Interleukin-4, Proteinuria, Nephrin, Podocalyxin, and Glomerular Epithelial Protein-1 in Mice Models of Nephrotic Syndrome Through Inhibition of B Cell Activating Factor”. The presentation of her research results was carried out at UB Medical Faculty Building, 10th floor.

Astrid developed the potential of Physalis angulata, which is commonly called by the community as the plant “Ciplukan” or morel berry. Morel berry is herbal plant with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. This plant has the potential as an additional therapy for kidney injury mediated by the immune response.

Morel berry also has the potential as an adjuvant therapy for nephrotic syndrome by improving podocytopathy through BAFF inhibition. Further research is needed to evaluate long-term safety, dose optimization, and clinical applications in humans.

The results of this research have received appreciation from various parties. There were several doctors who consider that this is a bold and very useful breakthrough. Utilizing the natural potential around the community to develop medical science, which of course, can be beneficial for the community.

Astrid is the first doctoral graduate by research at UB, with a study period of 2 years. Completed her studies under the guidance of Prof. Dr. dr. Loeki Enggar Fitri, M.Kes., Sp.ParK, Dr. dr. Nur Samsu, SpPD-KGH., FINASIM, Dr. dr. Krisni Subandiyah, Sp.A, Subsp.Nefro. as examiners are Prof. Agustina Tri Endharti, S.Si., Ph.D, Dr. dr. Dian Nugrahenny, M.Biomed, Dr. dr. Risky Vitria Prasetyo, Sp.A, Subsp.Nefro. [pon/ UB PR/ Trans. Iir]
