Dr. Shinta Maharani Trivena, S.AB., M.AB presented the results of her dissertation entitled “The Effect of Financial Literacy on Financial Performance Mediated by Financial Experience, Credit Access, and Financing Decisions”. The Dissertation Oration of the Doctoral Program in Administrative Science was held on Thursday (04/17/2025), at Building B, Faculty of Administrative Science, Universitas Brawijaya (FIA UB).
In her dissertation, Shinta discussed tourism as the leading sector of Indonesian economy, which is one of the largest contributors to the country’s foreign exchange. Malang Raya as a leading tourist destination in Indonesia recorded 13 million tourist visits in 2023. This creates opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) supporting tourism that provide various services such as accommodation, culinary, souvenir shops, tourist transportation, and travel services.

Through her research, Shinta highlighted the phenomenon of financial problems, especially in property development, debt management, and modernization of facilities, which make it difficult for tourism MSMEs to develop significantly. From the results of data analysis, Shinta found that financial literacy has a positive and significant influence on financial experience, and encourages MSME actors to be more active in exploring and using financial products.
“Good financial understanding is more effective if supported by easy access to credit, practical experience, and the right funding decisions, so that financial literacy has a more optimal impact on financial performance,” she explained.
Some of the suggestions she conveyed, including (1) Micro tourism business owners must take part in financial management training from the Tourism Office, MSME Office, and banking institutions that emphasize practical implementation, not just theoretical understanding. (2) Business owners need to create a financing plan that balances formal credit for long-term development and informal for urgent needs, as well as building an operational emergency fund. (3) Business owners need to systematically allocate income for asset development, including equipment modernization, procurement of special fleets, and transition from renting to property ownership.
She also hopes that the Financial Services and Banking Authority will encourage the development of practice-based financial education programs for micro-business owners supporting tourism, such as seasonal cash flow management workshops, credit application simulations, and business feasibility analysis training.
