Minister of National Development Planning of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharso Monoarfa

Brawijaya University (UB) held an open senate meeting to commemorate its 61st Anniversary, Friday (5/1/2024). The activity which was carried out at the Samantha Krida Building had the theme “Healthy and Dignified”.

Chief organizer of the Anniversary, Prof. Dian Handayani, SKM, M.Kes, Ph.D said that the healthy theme raised means that you don’t have to be healthy individually but also within the academic community, organizations and institutions.

“Health in an institution is related to open and accountable leadership,” she said.

Prof. Dian added that to support the meaning of health for the academic community, this activity also carried out health screening for lecturers with the title of professor, leaders and staff.

“UB’s human resources, such as lecturers, leaders and staff, are institutional assets whose health must be maintained in order to achieve optimal performance. It is hoped that UB academics can continue to work and create without having to experience problems of burnout and work exhaustion and not having time for themselves,” she said.

She added that unhealthy lifestyles such as lack of physical activity, pollution, consuming too much unhealthy food, work and study stress can give rise to degenerative diseases which can have a big impact on UB’s development. Therefore, physical and mental health screening is very necessary

“The hope is that the health screening that we have carried out can provide input to the faculties which can later become the basis for leadership policies to create a supportive academic and non-academic atmosphere within UB,” she said.

The Senate Open Meeting this time was also attended by the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Suharso Monoarfa. In his press conference with a number of media, Suharso hoped that there would be collaboration between universities and Bappenas, especially regarding teaching hospitals.

“And we want to encourage cooperation between UB and Unair in overcoming certain diseases. For example, in dealing with Dengue Fever, intense research has currently been carried out at UGM, cancer at Unpad, and medicine technology with ITB. So, there is something more specific in UB that we will explore later and hopefully we can realize it soon,” he said.

Suharso hopes that UB can become an institution that is able to utilize applied research based on the resources it has.

In the Senate Open Meeting, Prof. Sasmito Djati Representing the Trail Runners, Received a Medal from the Rector of UB

“For example, UB is strong in its agricultural technology, so how can livestock overcome the problem of imported meat supply even though there is a strong relationship between the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Industry and the local government,” he said.

Meanwhile, UB Rector, Prof. Widodo added that the establishment of a teaching hospital is not just for treating patients but is an institution that can respond to global health issues including stunting and diabetes.

“Universities are given the mandate to develop science in the health sector. Through the Teaching Hospital, it will contain research that can carry out therapy and diagnosis for which the technology does not yet exist and in line with human resources and professors,” he said.

The former Dean of FMIPA added that universities have an obligation to develop human resources who understand the field of research, especially basic science, therefore UB will respond by opening material science and future science study programs.
