Department of Informatics Engineering Explores Research Collaboration Opportunity with SOI-Asia

Representatives from the Department of Informatics Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Brawijaya (FILKOM UB), namely: Achmad Basuki, S.T., MMG., Ph.D., Agung Setia Budi, S.T., M.T., M.Eng., Ph.D. and Eko Setiawan, S.T., M.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., welcomed representatives from School on Internet Asia (SOI) Asia: Goki Miyakita and Eliko Akashi to encourage collaboration and cooperation in the “Community-Centric Open Science Infrastructure for Digital Humanities in the Asia-Pacific” project on (26/4-28/4/2024). This activity is one of FILKOM’s steps to continue to establish cooperation at the international level. SOI Asia, chaired by Prof. Jun Murai, Keio University, was launched in 2001 as a platform for educational programs between universities across Asia, to build an Internet education platform.

In Malang, the SOI Asia team visited several ancient Hindu temple sites and museums related to ancient history around Malang. The first visit was to the Kidaldi Tumpang temple, Malang Regency, then to the Singosari temple, the Singosari museum, Jago temple and Mendut temple. Finally, the group headed to the Mpu Purwa museum in the Soekarno Hatta area, Malang.

In the meeting, the two teams conducted a survey to discuss objects that had more value to be digitized. In the meeting that lasted for three days, the two teams also discussed techniques for digitizing the entire structure, including relief carvings and architectural elements.

The discussion highlighted that the digitization of these temples would serve as a safety net, ensuring that even if the physical structure faces challenges in the future, its essence and details are maintained in digital format. The team also discussed how to store and use digital data to maximize its impact and accessibility. This collaboration is an initial effort to increase access to unique history and culture around Malang while preserving these assets for future generations. The team hopes that through the contribution of computer science in the field of history, it can help preserve the nation’s cultural heritage and benefit the community (ese/rr/OKY/UB PR/ Trans. Iir).
