Departement of Sociology FISIP Improves Ecological Insight for Elementary School Students

Humans are increasingly faced with many ecological problems that require solutions from various parties. In order to face these challenges, the community service team from the Department of Sociology, FISIP UB, carried out outreach activities on ecological insight to create environmentally friendly behavior in elementary school students.

This educational activity was held on Monday (29/4/2024) at SDN Arjowinangun II, Malang City. The service team collaborates with Trash Hero Tumapel as an environmental organization that is active in efforts to solve the waste problem in Malang Raya.

It is hoped that the collaboration between academics and environmental organizations represented by Trash Hero Tumapel will not only provide cognitive and practical knowledge, but will also be able to foster inspiration so that students are encouraged to be actively involved in efforts to preserve the environment.

On this occasion, the Head of SDN Arjowinagun II, Malang City, Atik Setyawati, S.Pd, M.Pd, said that students must be able to understand the environment around them and it is important to develop environmental sensitivity from an early age.

The head of the Community Service team, Ayu Kartika S.AP., M.Si, said that learning activities were carried out using varied and interactive methods, namely providing material about what ecological problems are and their solutions. Then watch children’s animated films with environmental themes and also quizzes with prizes related to the learning material presented in the previous session.

“It was proven that during the activity, the students were very enthusiastic in receiving education and were competitive when entering the quiz session,” he explained.

Apart from showing animated videos, short videos accompanied by material provided by Trash Hero Tumapel sparked students’ critical understanding regarding waste production and management issues. Moreover, Trash Hero Tumapel also entertains and educates students by telling an illustrated story entitled “Maya Warrior of the Green City”.

The activity closed with joy when students wrote their hopes about the environment in the future on paper which was then attached to the wishing tree.

“I hope the environment around me will be healthy, clean, comfortable and more beautiful,” said one of the students participating in the activity. (FISIP PR/OKY/UB pr/ Trans. Iir)
