Department of Communication Sciences UB (Universitas Brawijaya) held a community service activity in the form of Public Speaking Training Scholarships for students throughout Malang Raya to improve public speaking skills for students. This is because public speaking skills are one of the important competencies that must be possessed by every individual in facing the challenges of the world of work and everyday life.
This event took place on Thursday, (6/27/2024) in collaboration with PT Sinergi Bicara Indonesia and the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Islam Malang.
The Public Speaking Training Scholarship activity is part of the third year of community service program initiated by three lecturers from the Department of Communication Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya, namely Nilam Wardasari, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom., Nia Ashton Destrity, S.I.Kom., MA, and Fariza Yuniar Rakhmawati, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom.
One of the members of the community service team, Nilam Wardasari, S.I.Kom, M.I.Kom, said that this activity is a real manifestation of the commitment to provide a positive contribution to society, especially in the field of communication.
“We hope that this training can help increase students’ self-confidence as the agent of change by honing their public speaking skills,” she said.
This activity was attended by 30 students from Malang Raya who were very enthusiastic about improving their public speaking skills. The participants received training materials delivered by Putri U. Rizqianingtyas, S. Sos., M.Med.Kom. as a professional practitioner from PT Sinergi Bicara Indonesia. The material presented includes basic public speaking techniques, capital to become a public speaker, professionalism, and strategies to attract public attention.
Meanwhile, a lecturer member of the community service team, Fariza Yuniar Rakhmawati, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom added that her party was very pleased to be able to collaborate with PT Sinergi Bicara Indonesia and the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Islam Malang.
“This collaboration is very meaningful in expanding the reach of our service and improving the quality of the activities we organize. This collaborative activity is also held as an effort to improve public communication competency to optimize student academic achievement,” she explained.
On the other hand, a Lecturer from the Department of Communication Science, FISIP UB, Nia Ashton Destrity, S.I.Kom., M.A., hopes that this training can support the development of students’ non-academic skills such as communication skills, leadership, and time management that can contribute to students’ lives after studying.
“Through this training, students are expected to be able to hone their ability to convey their ideas clearly and effectively as a form of developing non-academic skills,” she explained.
The activity from UB Communication Science Department received a very positive response from the participants. They were enthusiastic in following each training session and actively participated in discussions and direct practice.
