Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences Conveys the Contribution of Academic World to Increase Maritime Human Resources

Coastal areas have great potential as well as challenges for the Indonesian government. Coastal resource potential needs to be managed optimally to bring benefits to coastal communities, both physically and improving coastal human resources. Developing coastal areas and outermost small islands has strategic geo-political and geo-economic value, considering that the intensity of infrastructure development and population in coastal areas is still low, so it is considered important to realize Indonesia’s perspective as the World Maritime Axis (PMD), by realizing the reorientation of the nation’s development paradigm from land-based to maritime-based.

In commemoration of Maritime Day, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture held a national seminar “Resilient Coasts for Advanced Indonesia”.

This activity, which took place on Wednesday (13/9/2023), is part of the coordination, synchronization and policy control function carried out by the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture in order to support the National Mental Revolution Movement (GNRM).

Taking place in the Heritage building of the Coordinating Ministry for PMK, this seminar raised five themes, including Resilient Coasts for Advanced Indonesia, Real Action in Empowering Fishermen, Governance for Resilient Coastal Areas, Innovation for Added Value of Marine and Fishery Products (Strengthening Marine and Fishery Ecosystems in Coastal Areas) and the Contribution of the Academic World to Improving Maritime and Maritime Human Resources in Indonesia (Best Practice for Leading Coastal Areas with an Ideal Marine Industry – Fisheries).

Dean of FPIK UB and chairman of the Indonesian Fisheries and Maritime Higher Education Leadership Forum (FP2TPK), Prof. Dr. Ir. Maftuch, M.Si was a resource person on the topic Contribution of the Academic World to Improving Maritime and Maritime Human Resources in Indonesia (Best Practice for Leading Coastal Areas with an Ideal Marine Industry – Fisheries).

Fisheries and marine universities play a strategic role in increasing coastal resilience, through research activities for the development of coastal and marine commodities, as well as community and student service activities.

In his presentation, Prof. Maftuch conveyed the programs, plans and contributions of higher education under the umbrella of FP2TPK Indonesia.

“FP2TPK Indonesia oversees 139 universities that have fisheries and marine study programs. The big potential that can be concluded is that all university stakeholders with fisheries and marine study programs spread throughout the archipelago can collaborate with other stakeholders, such as the Coordinating Ministry for PMK, Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, KKP, Ministries and other institutions so that this potential has benefits for development Indonesian fisheries and marine affairs,” said Maftuch.

This national seminar by the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture seeks to realize collaboration and synergy between stakeholders/coastal development partners using the Pentahelix approach, in strengthening resilience in coastal areas within the framework of Equitable Regional Development. The Pentahelix approach is expected to produce policy and strategy recommendations in managing the potential of coastal areas as an effort to improve the quality of human resources, recognize identity and build national character.
