Dean of FISIP UB Propose University to Becomes Alternative Institution of Civilization Democracy Guard

The 2024 election is in sight. This five-year political competition has begun to be prepared. February 14, 2024 will be the arena for the contestants to achieve their respective political targets.

The Dean of FISIP UB, Dr Sholih Muadi, said that the realization of civilized democracy can be done, one of which involves alternative institutions, one of which is universities.

According to Sholih, there are three strengths that universities can do for civilizational democracy.

“These universities can be alternative institutions because they can become social control, social reflection and agents of social change,” he said when he became the Keynote Speech in the Public Dialogue on Civilization Democracy: Welcoming the 2024 Election in UB Widyaloka Building, Thursday (17/2/2022) .

Sholih assessed that the current democratic process still prioritizes money politics. His experience is that there are still many transactional voters at every election moment or regional head election.

“Some say transactional elections are around 40% but I believe it is more than that. Because many people in the village will go to the election site if someone gives them money,” continued this UB Political Science lecturer.

This transactional election has made voters, said Sholih, prefer candidates who are not strong in terms of program or vision and mission. But a strong candidate with financial capital.

“This is a fact that the condition of our democracy is still like this. Hopefully in 2024 the conditions will be different,” he explained.

The Public Dialogue also presented the speaker of Indonesian KPU Commissioner, Arief Budiman. Then the Vice Dean 1 of FISIP UB, Faishal Aminuddin. Chairman of PBNU, KH Fahrur Rozi and doctoral candidate at Oxford University, Abid Abdurrahman Adonis. (Humas FISIP/Humas UB/ Trans. Iir)
