The Univesitas Brawijaya (UB) Endowment Fund (DA) Management Team distributed scholarships to 39 UB students. Details of scholarships given to 19 students at the 19th period graduation on Saturday (29/6/2024) and then scholarships given to 20 students at the 20th period of graduation on Sunday (30/6/2024). The process of symbolically awarding scholarships was carried out directly by UB Chancellor, Prof. Widodo at UB Samantha Krida Building.
Director of the Directorate of Student Affairs, Dr. Sujarwo, said that his party carried out research and mapping of the eligibility of prospective students who received scholarships from DA-UB. The criteria set in the selection of DA-UB funds are economic criteria, academic capacity criteria, activeness in activities and student achievement. The selection results show that the parents of DA-UB scholarship students have an average family income of IDR 1,705,128 per month and there are even several families of DA-UB scholarship students who have an income of less than one million rupiah per month. In the midst of these limitations, there are those who have succeeded in achieving achievements in the fields of sports, scientific work and the arts.
The composition of DA-UB scholarship recipients consists of 10 new students and 29 old students, also distributed across 22 study programs. “There are new students (Maba) and old students (Mala) who are selected to receive scholarships. The new students who were selected were Indonesian Smart College Card (KIPK) participants who did not qualify because of the Study Program Accreditation (PS) was not eligible, but still re-registered. “For old students, those selected are active students in semesters 2, 4 and 6 who are economically disadvantaged but have good academic grades and have achievements,” explained the Director of Student Affairs who is also a lecturer from the Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UB.
Head of the DA-UB Management Team, Achmad Wicaksono Ph. D, said that currently DA-UB will focus on providing scholarships to help underprivileged students. Currently, scholarships will be given to 39 students with an amount of 3.5 million Rupiah each.
“The existence of DA-UB and this scholarship distribution activity is one of UB’s commitments to provide solutions to underprivileged people who want to study at UB. UB is not remaining silent and is trying to provide a way out amidst the recent public protests regarding tuition fees or UKT,” explained the DA-UB administrator and also a UB Civil Engineering lecturer who is familiarly called Soni.
Currently, UB has a unit tasked with managing the Endowment Fund. On various occasions the Chancellor said that UB Endowment Fund is an accumulation of funds that continues to grow and the results of its management are used to support the development of UB into a world-class university. The allocation of this endowment fund is for the development of the tri dharma of higher education, including scholarships, research, service, as well as for the development of other institutions.
“Many large universities abroad and within the country can improve their quality and existence with the support of good endowment fund management. In Indonesia, these include ITS, ITB and UI. Then abroad, we can take the example of Harvard, where even 30% to 40% of their activities are supported by the results of managing this endowment fund,” explained Widodo. [pon/UB PR/ Trans. Iir]
