
Universitas Brawijaya (UB) once again held the Brawijaya International Conference (BIC) 2024, which lasted for two days, November 21-22, 2024, at the Grand Lotus Ballroom, Aston Hotel, Batam. With the main theme “Artificial Intelligence at the Crossroads: Building a Sustainable Future,” this BIC is an important platform for academics, practitioners, and policy makers to discuss the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting sustainable development.

BIC was opened directly by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Universitas Brawijaya, Prof. Imam Santoso, who in his speech emphasized the importance of AI in responding to global challenges. “The transformation brought by artificial intelligence must be addressed wisely. BIC 2024 is expected to be a forum for critical dialogue, innovative ideas, and collaborative strategies that can encourage AI to become a force for good,” said Prof. Imam.
BIC 2024 was attended by more than 300 participants, including academics, researchers, and students from within and outside the country. Dozens of scientific papers were presented during the event, covering various disciplines ranging from law, politics, science, to engineering.

This event also featured keynote speaker, Prof. Ir. Wayan Firdaus Mahmudy, S.Si., MT., Ph.D., Director of the AI Center, Universitas Brawijaya. In addition, there were invited speakers from seven countries, including Dr. Mohd Saberi Mohamad from Australia, Assoc. Prof. Adam Tyson from England, and Assoc. Prof. Norhashila Hashim from Malaysia. Their presence reflects the global relevance of the theme raised.

On the first day, the agenda began with an opening session and remarks from Dr. Patricia Audrey Ruslijanto, SH., MKn., as Committee Chairman of the BIC 2024. She expressed her appreciation for the participation of all parties and emphasized that this year’s theme calls for exploring AI for sustainable solutions in various sectors.
“AI has the power to address global challenges, but it also carries ethical, environmental, and social implications that need to be balanced wisely. This BIC aims to explore the potential of AI while highlighting its limitations and challenges,” said Dr. Patricia.
The keynote speech session was the main highlight with speakers such as Prof. Wayan Firdaus Mahmudy who discussed the contribution of AI to sustainability in various sectors. The panel discussion that raised the theme of AI in law and applications in the agricultural sector also received high enthusiasm from the participants.
BIC 2024 is not only a place to share knowledge, but also to build global collaboration to address challenges in the digital era. Participants are expected to be able to strengthen the synergy between academics, industry, and society in order to direct AI as a solution that supports sustainable technology adaptation. With a series of interesting agendas and cross-disciplinary participation, BIC 2024 is an important step for Universitas Brawijaya in strengthening its position as a center for education and research that contributes to global issues.
