As a further continuation of the collaboration between the Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) and the Faculty of Creative Arts Universiti Malaya at the Art on Postcard Exhibition held in Malaysia, the two faculties have once again organized a collaborative art exhibition. Similar to the Art on Postcard Exhibition, this exhibition is also one of the events for the 15th Anniversary of FCS UB.

In the exhibition entitled “The Surfers of Time: The Intersection of Art, Science, and Technology” this time, FCS UB exhibited technology-based art installations by four artists and lecturers from the Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya.

The works include Life in Flux by Dr. Amira Hanafi, Expression of Mujarrad by Dr. Dzul Afiq Zakaria, Hidden Realities & New Worlds by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roslina Ismail, and Capturing the Ephemeral by Dr. Wahyuni Masyidah. These works were exhibited for four days, from Monday to Thursday (4-7/11/2024), at the Rectorate Building Hall on the 1st floor.

According to the Dean of FCS UB, Hamamah Ph.D., this exhibition is an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between universities and introduce art’s role in cross-disciplinary research.

“I am very grateful to colleagues from Universiti Malaya who have come all the way here to support us, showing the academic community of Universitas Brawijaya that art can collaborate with other branches of studies,” she said.

UB’s Vice Rector for Finance and Resources, Prof. Dr. M. Ali Safaat, S.H., M.H., officially opened the exhibition in UB’s Rectorate Hall on Monday (11/4/2024). His speech also conveyed the importance of collaboration in advancing art and science.

“We are grateful because this activity is excellent because of the excellent cooperation between two countries that actually have the same roots. According to the theme, art inevitably expresses feelings, feelings express reality, and reality is also influenced by science and technology. Art also uses technology in its development and is influenced by the development of science,” he said.

Prof. M. Ali Safaat also thanked FCS UB for the initiated collaboration and expressed his hope that this synergy would be even stronger.

“I would like to thank FCS UB for working together, and I am sure this cooperation will be enhanced to develop art and science that benefits Indonesian society,” concluded Prof. M. Ali Safaat.

As the curator and representative of Universiti Malaya, Assoc. Prof. Roslina Ismail expressed her gratitude to FCS UB for giving their best in this collaboration. She also explained the purpose and theme of this collaborative exhibition.

“We have collaborated before; this exhibition is a continuation of the Art on Postcard exhibition, where our friends from FCS UB have brought 1000 postcards to our faculty. After that, we were invited here to take turns carrying out exhibitions of our faculty’s work,” she said.

She added that one of the aims of “The Surfers of Time” exhibition is to showcase the development of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning in the art world.

“We present the Surfers of Time exhibition that will show the state of the world that is facing various responses regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. As academics, we should explore it instead of seeing it as a bad thing,” she added.

“The purpose of the works in the Surfers of Time exhibition is healing. One of them is Dr. Wahyuni’s work. She documented the traditional self-healing movements of an almost extinct ancestral teaching by putting motion capture to capture the smooth and dynamic movements so that it can be saved and shared as art for the next 100 years,” she concluded.

In addition to displaying four art installations from Universiti Malaya, this exhibition also showcases the work of UB leaders in the UB Leaders Painting activity, which is also one of the series of events for the 15th Anniversary of FCS UB.

The chief committee of the event, Mayang Anggrian, M.Pd., hopes that various groups can appreciate this exhibition.

“Hopefully, everyone will appreciate this work. Everyone can enjoy this exhibition and be inspired by the fact that art can be approached with a research and interdisciplinary approach. I hope that we will be more inspired to do experimental artwork,” she said. [acl/dts/PR FCS]
