Andira Rahmawati, who is familiarly called Ira, a student of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Brawijaya (FPIK UB) has once again made her alma mater proud. This achieved student selected at the university level won 1st place at the Global Youth Innovation Summit (GYIS) 2024 in the SDGs Project Innovation category. This event lasted for four days, (15-18/07/2024) at IIUM Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
GYIS 2024 is an exchange program attended by delegates from various backgrounds to create or develop projects that can answer problems related to SDGs points through cultural and educational exchanges. This international program is organized by Pemuda Mendunia in collaboration with University Malaya and Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
Related to renewable energy innovation, Andira utilizes empty oil palm bunch waste into an energy-producing component that is packaged in an electrical energy storage device called a “supercapacitor”.
This breakthrough offers an alternative solution to environmental problems caused by increasing oil palm waste, as well as limited access to electricity in remote areas of East Kalimantan. This brilliant idea also opens up opportunities for cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia, considering that Malaysia has high palm oil potential in the world.
In addition to competing, Andira and 40 selected delegates from 800 registrants had the opportunity to visit various destinations in the neighboring country, such as KLCC, the National Bank of Malaysia Museum, Batu Caves, and exchange cultures at MaTic. Andira also explored Singapore by visiting Merlion Park, USS, Gardens by the Bay, and the National University of Singapore, the best campus in Asia.
“I hope that the innovation that I have presented can be realized in real terms for the sustainability of development in Indonesia and become an effective means of increasing international cooperation. The opportunity to compete carrying the name of Brawijaya, while traveling to a neighboring country is certainly a valuable experience that provides memorable memories. Hopefully fellow students will get the same opportunity in the next batch,” said Andira. [Hilya/Irene/ UB PR/ Trans. Iir]
