The Community Service Team of the Government Science Study Program, Universitas Brawijaya, conducted community service in Tasikmadu Village, Malang City. One of the things raised was the participation of women in politics.
Lecturer of UB Government Science Study Program, Dr. Mohtar Haboddin, assessed that the presence of Ganis Rumpoko in the 2024 mayor election contestation showed the marginalization of women in politics and the 2024 Malang City mayor election showed male dominance.
“This is a political fact that shows the lack of women’s participation in the struggle for power. Even though our constitution has regulated the same opportunities and equality in accessing power,” he said.
Mohtar stated that with only one female candidate appearing, it would not be beneficial for women. The reason is, firstly, the position of representative does not have the authority to determine pro-women policies. In fact, voter data shows that the number of women is greater than men.
Second, the 2024 mayoral election still places women as political objects, rather than political subjects. Third, the 2024 mayoral election has not been able to raise awareness among women as actors who are able to make changes in society.
“Therefore, their position is necessary and has an honorable place,” added Mohtar.
He added that the lack of women in the mayor election contest shows the failure of political parties in creating cadres of political leaders. “This also shows the increasingly strong patriarchal culture, so that it does not provide space for women to participate in the struggle for the mayoral position,” he said.
With this phenomenon, UB Government Science Study Program considers it necessary to carry out continuous political awareness because women must have political awareness that becoming a political leader is a must.
“Because, by becoming a political leader, they also take part in making policies for all Malang residents,” he said.
Mohtar assessed that with regional autonomy and democracy, women in Malang City would actually be more active in politics. “The argument is based on the East Java governor candidates. The 2024 gubernatorial election shows the battle of three female heroes,” he said.
The community service activity was attended by 50 women in Tasikmadu Village, Malang City. In general, the women were very enthusiastic in welcoming the activities carried out by the lecturers of Government Science, FISIP UB. This is because they have never participated in the socialization activities for the Mayoral Election. Therefore, they really hope that every year socialization activities will be carried out in an effort to strengthen their capacity towards the ongoing political dynamics. (*/UB PR/ Trans. Iir).
