The Centre of Civilization Study Organize Seminar on Indonesian Keris

Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia proposed 25 November as a National Keris Day. This is important to preserve the work of Indonesian culture as well as to celebrate inauguration of keris as the world's intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Thus as said by researcher at Puslitjakdikbud, Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs Unggul Sudrajat in a national seminar of Indonesian Keris on Monday (15/Oct/2018) at Widyaloka building Brawijaya University.

Unggul mentioned, since it was recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage on 25 November 2018, Keris has given huge impact for Indonesia. Such as improving cultural value awareness, fostering national pride, as well as the growth of public interest to learn knowledge on it or having it.

"This is seen from potential of keris industry development in Sumenep that rapidly growing, currently Sumenep Regency becomes centre of the largest keris industry in Indonesia. Until current, it is recorded around 652 keris industry crafters scattered in three sub-districts i.e. sub-districts of Bluto, Saronggi and Lenteng. Its transaction in the past year has reached 10.8 billion rupiahs." He affirmed.

While the second largest keris industry area is Special Region of Yogyakarta around 237 crafters with the main concentration in Imogiri, Bantul.

Meanwhile, International Cultural Observer and National Writer HM Nasrudin Anshoriy Ch mentioned, keris is more than just a national identity. "Keris is one of guru who gives very big spirit to me. It is different from a kitchen knife. Kitchen knife is only five to seven forgings, but keris is minimally three thousands and then just generates prestige," said the man who is familiarly called as Gus Nus.

Founder of the nationality village of Ilmu Giri Yogyakarta added, we need thousands of forgings to bring out our true prestige. "Unless tremendous forgings as keris is forged by its empu (the master) on his/her iron ore choice and very long spiritual process will produce a masterpiece. Likewise the process to build a very strong character within us to be excellence human beings," he said.

The event was organized by Study Centre of Civilization supervised by Research and Community Service Institute. In addition to both speaker who presented national keris literacy in millennial era from cultural aspect, the seminar also invited Ustadz Salim A. Fillah as well as nanomaterial and complex system researcher from Research Centre for Advanced System and Material Techology (RC ASMAT) Ir. DJ. Djoko H. Santjojo, M.Phil., PhD who presented from religious and science aspects.

In religious aspect, Ustadz Salim A. Fillah delivered that keris has life-motivation philosophy. For instance, keris' prestige 'wos wutah' literally means spilled rice and prestige 'pedharingan kebak' means a full barn.

"It's a mistake if people believe that having keris will be very rich. Prestige is a beauty above a 'bilah' that should be a trigger of inspiration every time we see it. When people see a picture of rice that spilled over and a barn is full then will make us passionate to work hard, working on farms and pursue other fields," said the caretaker of the prophet's footsteps majlis.

In accordance with Islamic passion, furthermore he delivered, it becomes a mandate to release keris from jahiliyah era, such as making it an occult and considering it is always an occult. "Keris needs to be brought to its origin as a science from aspects like metallurgy, arts, philosophy, up to its history," he said.

In the end of the event, Ir. DJ. Djoko H. Santjojo, M.Phil., PhD explores keris from science aspect. According to him, keris is a unique creation as having nano structure within. "Depending on its component, micro structure and morphology, keris is a complex system consisted of high performance material elements, functional even smart material within," he ended.
