ENJ UB at Cockatoo Island Reaps Many Lessons

Masakambing island is one of remote islands in East Java, precisely in Masalembu archipelago, Sumenep District. The island located in between Madura and Kalimantan island has a privilege as becoming the last habitat for little yellow crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea abbotti).

In 9 August 2018, 25 students of vary faculties at Brawijaya University had departed to Masakambing island in order to accomplish some missions, such as observation of flora and fauna within the island. The mission was packaged in an expedition named as Ekspedisi Nusantara Jaya (ENJ).

ENJ itself is a program from Maritime Coordinating Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia which includes young people to further explore maritime potential in Indonesia, remote islands in particular. These potentials are then explored via 11 programs, one of them was conducted at Masakambing Island. Such as relocation of Rumah Baca Kakatua Brawijaya, Masakambing Brilliant Generation, leadership school and Brawijaya Maritime Affairs, joint room activities, Semarak Kemerdekaan (lively independence), bazaar and Sustainable food home region.

The event is a program aims to make the people more independent in food supply especially vegetable. ENJ team teach the community especially PKK (Family Welfare Education) participants on how to plant and how to plant and caring for plants properly, observation of flora, fauna and culture, socialize to residents on a goof packaging process for village featured products as well as farewell party.

Not only the success of the program is targeted, but also inner braid between teams of ENJ UB 2018 and local communities. Lots of valuable experience and lessons that was obtained by the team during 17 days living in the island. As mentioned by Fadillah Ayu TYa.

For her, ENJ gives lots of knowledge especially in communication with wider community.

For me, ENJ is a community laboratory which provides lessons for understanding more bout community itself. Besides, via the program I can learn on how the development of endemic species in Masakambing island namely cockatoo," she said.

Result of the potential exploration and expedition to the Cockatoo island later will be summarized in form of an encyclopedia or CD contains of Masakambing island local wisdom and some documentations during the expedition.
