A TEP’s Lecturer as the Keynote Speaker at International Conference of Membranes for Clean Water

Dr. Yusuf Wibisono, STP. MSc, a lecturer from Bioprocess Engineering Study Program, Agricultural Engineering Department, Faculty of Agricultural Technology Universitas Brawijaya was invited to be the keynote speaker. He was asked to speak at an international conference "Conference of Membrane Technology for Desalination (MTFD 2014): Clean Water and Energy Efficiency" which was held at 29 to 30 October 2014 in Jakarta.

In MTFD 2014 conference, Dr. Yusuf Wibisono, STP, MSc presented about the importance of membrane technology for drinking water supply and waste water management for industry. As he described, the usage of membrane technology for water management is more efficient than conventional management. However, the challenge of application of membrane technology such as fouling is still a main problem.

Biofouling becomes the main issue in nanofiltration technology and reverse osmosis, and the use of chemical solvent for cleaning membrane module is proved ineffective. The process of cleaning a membrane module using physical treatment with optimization technology 2-phase flow becomes a potential to be applied.

Yusuf’s explanation is welcomed and appreciated by the conference participants from  academics, researchers and practitioners in business and industry of water management, such as membrane manufacturer from South Korea, CSM/Toray Chemical Korea.

MTFD 2014 conference was held in accordance to the National Research Agenda (ARN) 2015-2019 which has been prepared on May 6, 2014. In the preparation of ARN, science and technology research programs involve the relevant agencies such as National Research Council (DRN), the relevant officials in the Ministry of Research and Technology and BPPT. In the National Research Priority will be focused on three research focuses, e.g., Food, Energy and Water (FEW). Particularly for water, it will be devoted to research related to water management, water availability and water control.
