Center for Coastal and Marine Studies Brawijaya University (Pusat Studi Pesisir dan Kelautan Universitas Brawijaya/PSPK UB) along with Tuban Regent, Fathul Huda, had a salt harvest on Wednesday (26/Dec/2019) in Leranwetan Village, Palang Sub-district. The great harvest is salt harvest using Green House Tunnel methods. It is a salt production method that use greenhouse technology for salt crystallization. The method application enable salt production to carry out during the year including in the rainy season.

Different parties attended and watched this Salt great harvest in the rainy season. In addition to be attended by local government and Community of Tuban salt farmers, the event also followed by delegates of Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs. Marine and Fisheries Department of East Java Province, Fisheries and Livestock Department of Tuban Regency, PT. Kencana Tiara Gumilang (KTG) and researchers as well as students from Centre of Coastal and Marine Research Brawijaya University.

Methods of salt production using Green House Tunnel is adopted from Fisheries and Livestock Department of Tuban Regency from research in salt production developed from collaboration of PSPK UB, Local Research and Development Agency of East Java Province, Fisheries and Livestock Department of Tuban Regency, PT. Kencana Tiara Gumilang and salt farmer group if Leranwetan Village.

Fathul Huda explained about concept of Green House Tunnel Technology from Chairman of PSPK UB Andi Kurniawan. The lecturer from Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science Brawijaya University explained that application of Green House Tunnel technology can make the salt production is remained to do at rainy season. The production really do all production process at rainy season, not just crystallizing old water produced at dry season in the rainy season. By applying and combining salt production strategy throughout the year, then the salt production obtained is 164 tons annually, more around 60 up to 80 tons of conventional salt production.

Salt quality that produced can reach NaCl level around 98%. Break Event Point (BEP) from making tunnels will be reached less than a year with the durability of construction buildings can reach three up to five years.

After getting an explanation from PSPK UB, Fathul Huda had a dialogue with salt farmers who apply the technology innovation development. He made sure that salt farmers are capable of applying and generating profit economically. He also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all researchers at PSPK UB, Diskandak Tuban and all related parties for the development of this method in Tuban and hoping that it can be followed up by the related department. KKP delegates, Freude T.P. Hutahean, mentioned that development program of Green House Tunnel method in Tuban is good example on how the elements of government, college, industry and community cooperate to develop innovation that able to solve one of main problems on salt production in Indonesia.

M. Amanan as Chairman of Fisheries and Livestock Department of Tuban Regency and initiator of application of Green House Tunnel technology in Leranwetan Village delivered that his party will continuously support the technology development and application. M. Amanan also added, the technology department is realization of Diskandak Tuban efforts to translate vision and mission as well as referrals from Tuban Regent to develop application of technology and innovation that can reach Tuban community welfare. In the same place, Slamet Budiono - Chairman of Coastal, Marine and Supervision from the Fisheries and Marine Department of East Java Province expected that research and development of Green House Tunnel method is continuously done.
