Foreign Students of Darmasiswa RI Program FCS UB Practiced Gamelan

Besides learning to make batik and ceramics typical of Malang, the foreign students of Darmasiswa RI Program batch 2018/2019, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) were also given knowledge about Javanese gamelan. They practiced gamelan at the 1st floor of UB Rectorate Building every Wednesday starting at 4 p.m.

Trained by three trainers from Unitantri UB, this activity was held for ten meetings. This activity was begun by introducing Javanese gamelan instruments consisting bonang barung/bonang babok/bonang babon, bonang penerus, saron, peking, demung, slenthem, kenong, kethuk, kempyang, kempul, gong, gender, gambang, and kendang.

The students were also introduced to musical notations that were often used in gending played with a set of Javanese gamelan, those are slendro and pelog. To begin with, the trainers from Unitantri UB taught the students of Darmasiswa RI Program FCS UB to play a lancaran song which was a simple form of gending. The first song taught was "Suwe Ora Jamu".

Those foreign students were very enthusiastic in playing the Javanese gamelan instruments. Those foreign students of Darmasiswa RI Program batch 2018/2019 in FCS UB were Raj Nandita from India, Solohery Mampionona Aime Randrianantenaina from Madagascar, Maria Galkina from Russia, Byungju Shim from South Korea, Emmanuel Michael Massay from Tanzania, Ho Anh Nguyet and Tran Huu Nguyet Cam from Vietnam.

The purpose of this activity is to introduce the culture of Indonesia as well as to provide experience in playing Javanese gamelan instruments to all students of Darmasiswa RI Program FCS UB. Hopefully, by the end of this semester, they are able to play simple traditional Javanese songs to be staged at their farewell show. [DT/MSH/PSIK FIB]
