Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (Konsorsium Bioteknologi Indonesia/KBI) organized a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) titled "Implementation of Agricultural Biotechnology to Support Food Self-Sufficiency" on Monday (17/Sep/2018).

"This FGD is part of a series of International Conference on Green Agroindustry and Bioeconomy (ICGAB) 2018 held by Faculty of Agricultural Technology in collaboration with PERMI (Perhimpunan Mikrobiologi Indonesia)," said Agustin Krisna Wardani, PhD, Vice Dean I on Academic Affairs at Faculty of Agricultural Technology as Person in Charge of the event.

The FGD organizing aims to exchange information related to biotechnology development in Indonesia and as a form of socialization to the Indonesian community on the importance of biotechnology roles to support food supply. Considering significant increasing of Indonesia and global population but limited availability of land. Thus, biotechnology is reliable as an alternative to solve the problems.

The community has not understood much about technology and still see it as technology which is difficult to be implemented.

Through this forum, KBI wants to convey that biotechnology is not a technology should be avoided but must be embraced to give contribution especially in solving food problems. For instance, application of CRISPR/CAS9 genome editing is a technique in biotechnology which can be used to improve productivity and quality of food crops with some features such as shorter in time, more efficient, and more precise to produce new crops compared with manufacture of modified genetic engineering crops.

KBI is an organization consists of biotechnology actors and observer from vary universities, government and private institution, industry or research institutes. KBI routinely carries out an FGD by raising different issues. In the event, some speakers were such as Prof. Bambang Purwantoro (Bogor Agricultural University), Prof. Bambang Sugiharto (University of Jember), Dr. Ir. Tri Joko (Research and Development Institute on Plantation) and Dr. Ir. H.E. Herman Khaerun (a member of House Representative of the Republic of Indonesia).

The event was officially opened by Dean of Faculty of Agricultural Technology Dr. Sudarminto Setyo Yuwono as the host, and Dr. Siswa Setyahadi as Chairman of KBI. Siswa Setyahadi explained that attendance of House of Representative member in this forum is expected to be able to support biotechnology development in Indonesia through policy making related to PRG (Genetic Modified Products/Produk Rekayasa Genetik).

"Our expectation, Indonesia with tremendous bio-resources can run faster in developing and using biotechnology for national welfare," said Agustin. [AKW/Humas UB/trans. Denok]
