Dissertation of Andi Pertiwi Damayanti , S.Pt.,M.Si
Performance of Local duck broiler carcasses tend to seem dirty because there is still a black feather base that left behind. Various previous studies on improvement of duck productivity and clean carcass performance through many studies have been carried out. The result indicates that meat performance and quality is better and more efficient use of feed. However, there are still lots of pinfeather left on the carcass.
Respond to that, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries lecturer at Tadulako University, Andy Pertiwi Damayanti, S.Pt., M.Si had a research titled "Evaluation of the Use of Chicken Feather Flour towards Performance of Production and Numbers of Pin Feather in Duck Carcasses. The research which is a prerequisite to get doctorate degree at Faculty of Animal Husbandry Brawijaya University was supervised by Prof. M. Nur Ihsan (Faculty of Animal Husbandry Brawijaya University), Dr. Eko Widodo (Faculty of Animal Husbandry Brawijaya University), and Prof. Burhanudin Sundu (Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Tadulako University).
Andi mentioned, domestic poultry has a natural cycle on feather growth that is shedding and moulting. Supporting the feather growth cycle is nutrient, because the more mature the fur will make feather removal is easier during the duck processing to be carcasses. It can improve consumers' performance from the aspect of carcass performance which is clean from pinfeather.
In this research, Andi uses industrial feather waste from poultry cutting to get nutrition. Because chicken feather waste contains sulfuric amino acids which can be used as protein organizer in duck feather. He has waste fur processing with enzymatic hydrolysis methods using Allzyme fd to improve TBHE (Enzymatic Hydrolyzate Fur Flour) digestibility.
The initial stage of research is evaluating TBHE nutrient content which comes from pre-grinding and post-grinding fur waste. Then the evaluation stage is carried out to examine the using of TBHE Allzyme FD in the form of fur waste and different enzyme level towards protein digestibility and the value of Apparent Metabolic Energy (EMS) and energy value of Nitrogen Corrected Metabolic (EMSn).
Meanwhile, the last stage is growth test measurement of PPF (Protruding Pinfeather) numbers and NPPF (Non Protruding Pinfeather) which is left on the duck carcass. The testing phase is carried out separately but at the same time of 10 weeks. Using RAL (Complete Random Design) which consists of three treatments and six repetitions, of which each of the repetition is for six ducks.
Variables to measure are including feed consumption, body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion, and carcass percentage. Meanwhile evaluation on the use of TBHE towards numbers of PPF NPPF on duck carcass is carried out to spur the growth of duck feather based on feather weight variable, feather percentage, as well as numbers of PPF and NPPF which are left on the duck carcasses aged 7 up to 10 weeks.
The research indicates that TBHE Allyzme fd nutrient content of the fur flour, protein digestibility, digestibility such amino acids as methionine, lysine, treonin, and EMS. Thus it improves body weight and carcass weight as well. The use of 5% fur flour of enzymatic hydrolysate in the basal feed is proven reducing PPF and NPPF which are left in carcass and potentially give better carcass' physical performance.
