Anti Drowsiness Jacket UB Won Gold Medal in Malaysia
Anti drowsiness jacket maker team Smart Android Jacket for Safety Riding and Relaxation (SIJAR) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) gain gold medal in The 3rd International Innovation Design and Articulation (i-IDeA) 2016. The competition was held on 27 to 29 April 2016 at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Perlis, Malaysia.

Present directly to give the award was the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia, Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar Bin Mohamad Diah. SIJAR team consists of Muhammad Nur Azis (Mechanical Engineering), Yasir Aziz N (Mechanical Engineering), Ahmad Fauzi (Mechanical Engineering), Novita Qurrota A (Medicine), and Nardo Golan (Electrical Engineering).

In this competition, SIJAR Team join the event C class, the level of student and equal. Total participant for this class is 106 teams from three Countries; Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

“In this category there are five teams that get the gold medal, including us. Alhamdulillah our team is the only team from Indonesia who get the gold medal in all classes,” said the SIJAR team leader, Muhammad Nur Aziz.

SIJAR jacket is the development of Smart Electric Jacket for Safety and Relaxation Smart Electric Jacket for Safety and Relaxation (SEJSAR) that was created earlier. This jacket serves to prevent driver to get sleepy in the middle of the road. The working principle of the jacket is when the sensor reads the driver’s pulse parameter is less than the normal per minute, the alarm in the jacket will sound. This alarm serves as a warning that the user is in a state of drowsiness or fatigue.

The jacket has electrical therapy tools which correspond directly to the user’s skin. When the alarm sounds, electric therapy is going to work. But when the user pulse rate return to normal, electrical therapy will stop. This electrical therapy provides a relaxing effect on the body so that the circulation return to normal and oxygen supply to a maximum.

Other uniqueness of this jacket is the use of body heat to meet the electric energy need for it operations. Jacket utilizes the temperature difference between the body with the environment to produce electrical energy through thermoelectric media.

“However, for this competition, SIJAR jaket added two new stand out concepts, the addition oximeter to measure oxygen saturation and the addition of android applications,” said Azis.

Aziz explained, Oximeter is useful to determine the oxygen saturation of the jacket. When saturation of the driver is not normal (below 95%), it indicates that the user is in a state of fatigue or sleepiness disorder which is not normal (in medical term OSA = Obstructive Sleep Apneu).

Meanwhile, the addition of android application is to facilitate the control and media processing apparatus through a smartphone.

The jury in this competition, said Azis, expressed positive comments on this innovation. However they asks the team to take prioritize in testing to users. Then, the data collected from the test made into a statistic to reinforce the usefulness of the tool.

“This is in line with our team Vision. InshaaAlloh this time we often test the quality and performance of the equipment,” said Aziz, the student of class 2012.

It is intended to allow optimization not only in security, but also the user’s convenience in using this jacket. This is to support the will to commercialize this jacket in the future.

Alhamdulillah we are very grateful, teams get more results from our expectations. Initially we just want to promote our jacket so it will recognize, but ended up getting a gold medal,” he said. (and/mic/Humas UB)
